Guiding and connecting the country’s most talented young mathematicians
Pathfinder is a ten-year program that supports and inspires our Stars’ mathematical journeys from as early as second grade through the end of high school. Pathfinder is open to all of the country’s most talented young mathematicians, regardless of family need. Pathfinder Stars and their families gain access to expert guidance from the National Math Stars team, fun and informational community gatherings, and a pool of need-based funds to pay for advanced STEM courses and camps. Compared to Voyager, Pathfinder is less intensive, more flexible, and more parent-led.
Pathfinder is named after the 1997 NASA mission to Mars that landed a base station and deployed a rover on the surface (the first rover to visit Mars). It served as a proof-of-concept for many new technologies (like airbags for touchdown) that were used on later Mars missions. The mission was remarkable not just for its scientific experiments and discoveries, but also for its short development timeline and low cost. Pathfinder proved that we could build spacecraft “faster, better, and cheaper” than we thought possible.
As of 2025-26, Pathfinder is in its pilot year. We expect details of the program to evolve as we learn from our fearless pilot families. In the program’s current iteration, Pathfinder families can expect:
We connect each Star to advanced math courses that keep them challenged and engaged. As Stars progress, we work closely with families to continuously revise their suggested learning plans. Stars also have access to tutoring support as they tackle their advanced math coursework
We guide parents on how to support their Star’s STEM journey. We can recommend extracurricular providers tied to specific interests (e.g., robotics, biochemistry, astronomy), ensure Stars know about great summer camps (and don’t miss their application deadlines), and help with school advocacy
We have a pool of financial aid available to offset the financial burden of enrichment activities. Families can request assistance covering the cost of advanced STEM courses and associated materials, club/activity fees, and summer camp tuition or travel. As needed, we can also support families in applying for outside aid (e.g., scholarships offered by summer camps). All families – regardless of whether they receive a financial award – also have access to National Math Stars’ discounted rates with several excellent STEM course and camp providers
Stars and their families join our vibrant mathematical community. Our family forums serve as a hub to connect and ask questions, and virtual events offer both useful information (e.g., summer camp seminars) and fun bonding time (e.g., math jams and chess tournaments)
We don’t want to say too much about this… but all our Stars should be sure to keep an eye out for swag packs and special event invitations!
