About the Voyager Stars Program

Voyager is a ten-year, fully funded program that supports and inspires our Stars’ mathematical journeys from as early as second grade through the end of high school. Voyager is designed for families with significant unmet need for both guidance and financial support. Over ten years, we invest more than $100,000 in each Star to create a pathway for them to reach the frontiers of mathematics, science, and technology. Every Star is unique, so we work in close partnership with them and their families to design a journey that aligns with their strengths and interests.

Voyager is named after the NASA program that launched two interstellar probes in 1977. Those probes made discoveries about Saturn and Jupiter during their initial missions that greatly expanded our understanding of those planets. Their missions were then extended to exploring Uranus and Neptune — and then extended again to encompass the area beyond our solar system. Incredibly, both probes are still in operation! They are currently the only human-made objects in interstellar space.

All Voyager Stars receive support aligned with our four program components:

Mathematics Development

Stars explore deep, engaging, and challenging mathematics at a pace and level customized to their needs.

  • Advanced Math Courses

Stars enroll in at least one advanced math course each semester, either through our partners Art of Problem Solving (AoPS) or through other high-quality providers.

  • Weekly Math Mentoring

To cultivate a strong mathematical identity, Stars engage in 30- to 60-minute individual or collaborative weekly sessions with a math mentor. These sessions involve deep problem solving, exploring new concepts, and posing mathematical questions.

  • STEM Summer Experiences

Stars enjoy annual STEM summer experiences. These opportunities connect them with like-minded peers and talented faculty, fostering in-depth explorations of new STEM concepts.

  • STEM Program Pathways

As our Stars identify their fields of interest, we collaborate to build flexible pathways aligned with these interests, including options like research in mathematics or a focus on computer science.

Financial Support

Stars and their families receive financial support for STEM opportunities of their choice during the school year and summers.

  • Annual Family Budget

Families receive a yearly budget for their Star to participate in STEM enrichment opportunities such as robotics clubs, museum memberships, chess lessons, and more. Our advisors guide families in maximizing these funds to fully support their child’s STEM interests.

  • Technology Welcome Pack

Stars receive a welcome pack at the program’s start to ensure access to virtual math courses, mentoring, and resources. The pack includes technology, supplies, books, and games!

Family Advising

Stars and their families receive comprehensive, ongoing support from advisors who understand the needs of academically advanced students.

  • Dedicated Family Advisor

Families receive continuous support from an advisor throughout their 10-year journey. Advisors meet monthly with families to build personalized pathway plans, identify and enroll in STEM programs, and address any individual needs.

  • School Advocacy

Advisors collaborate with families to advocate for their child’s needs in school. This includes sharing information on advocacy rights, building school relationships, navigating gifted and special education programs, and determining appropriate math class placements. Their support extends to researching, applying to, and selecting schools during key transitions.

  • College Counseling and Career Exploration

During high school, Stars explore career pathways through internships and events. We provide quality college counseling to ensure Stars can apply to and afford their preferred colleges.

Supportive Community

Stars and their families are connected and supported in a community of belonging.

  • Supportive Cohort Model

Stars and their families kick off the program with an in-person Welcome Weekend and engage in regular in-person and virtual events throughout their 10-year journey. From quarterly virtual community events to family- and advisor-led meet-ups and interest-driven clubs, we foster a strong, lasting community.

  • Family and Star Forums

Stars and their families have access to forums during and after the program to stay connected and share experiences.

  • Family Resources and Updates

Families have access to a database of key resources as they navigate supporting their child’s strengths, areas of growth, and interests. Families also receive newsletters with program updates and celebrations of Stars’ and their families’ achievements.

First-Year Timeline

Every National Math Stars family plots their own journey, with the help of their advisor and math mentor. Which classes a Star takes, STEM activities they pursue, and summer camps they attend depend on their background and interests.

Here’s a broad picture of what to expect in our Voyager Stars Program:

  • August-September

Selection and onboarding Stars are notified of their acceptance to the program! You will then meet your family advisor, who will deliver your laptop and swag. You will also complete a math diagnostic, which we'll use to place you in an advanced math course and pair you with a math mentoring group.
  • October

Welcome Weekend All of our new Voyager families gather to meet each other, learn more about the program, and celebrate! This is followed by opportunities to attend smaller in-person and virtual events throughout the rest of the year.
  • October-May

Courses and mentoring All Stars take advanced math courses, which typically meet online or in person 1-2x per week. You'll also meet weekly for about 60 minutes with other Stars in a math mentoring group to explore topics of interest. You can spend your enrichment budget on additional STEM experiences such as coding classes, robotics teams, chess lessons, 3D printing materials, and more.
  • December-February

Summer camp applications Since Stars will attend a STEM summer experience, this is the time to work with your advisor and look for the right fit. Many selective programs require students to apply, with applications due in this window.
  • June-August

Summer camps Stars can take a break from courses and mentoring for the summer to relax... and to attend camp! National Math Stars funds a STEM-related camp (sleepaway or commuter) for every Voyager Star.

Haripriya and her mother at Welcome Weekend 2024

Example Journey: Haripriya

August 2024:

  • Haripriya’s family received a phone call that she had been admitted to National Math Stars!

September 2024:

  • Haripriya and her mother met their family advisor, Bilqis, at a Starbucks near their home. Bilqis explained more details about program participation and gave Haripriya a backpack with a laptop, puzzles, books, and NMS swag
  • Completed a math diagnostic with a mentor. After discussing with her family, we agreed on an Art of Problem Solving Introduction to Algebra course for fall

October 2024:

  • Math mentoring sessions kicked off! Haripriya was paired with Cindy Zhang (mentor) and Holden (another Star). They meet every Wednesday for an hour. In their initial sessions, the group has explored number theory, symmetries of polygons, group theory notation, and more
  • Began her Algebra A course. This live virtual class meets once weekly for 105 minutes, with homework between sessions. If she’s ever stuck on homework problems, Haripriya can bring them to her math mentor, or drop in on tutoring office hours
  • Attended Welcome Weekend in Houston. Haripriya met Holden in person, solved lots of puzzles, and tried her hand at programming micro:bits

November 2024:

  • Used STEM enrichment budget to purchase Hack Packs and coding books. Also began a self-paced coding course through Brilliant

December 2024:

March 2025:

  • Finished her Algebra A course and enrolled in Algebra B
  • Decided to attend Epsilon Camp this summer, alongside three other National Math Stars!

April 2025:

May 2025:

  • Completed mentoring sessions for the year. (They will resume in September)
  • Attended the Houston-area end-of-year celebration… where Haripriya and her fellow Stars successfully escaped from an escape room!

July 2025:

  • Finished her Algebra B class
  • Had an awesome time at Epsilon Camp!
