TEXAS, September 3, 2024 – Today, National Math Stars announced that they have selected 61 Texas students as 2024 Stars. These Stars will receive a decade of intensive support, preparing them to become the next generation of leading mathematicians, scientists, and engineers.
The 2024 Stars come from 27 different Texas school districts, including public school, charter school, private school, and homeschooled students. They range in age from 6 to 10. While many of them live near Texas’s largest metro areas, others hail from College Station, Del Rio, and the Rio Grande Valley. On average, Stars scored above 99th percentile on both the quantitative and nonverbal sections of the Cognitive Abilities Test.
“I couldn’t be more excited about this group of students,” said National Math Stars CEO Ilana Walder-Biesanz. “Every Star impressed our team. Their talent and love of math shine. Many of them face significant obstacles to accessing opportunities, which makes the fact that they are already achieving at this level even more amazing. Congratulations to our Stars and their families! We can’t wait to see you learn and grow in the coming years.”
For the 2024 cohort, National Math Stars received over 1,300 applications from all around Texas. Successful applicants excelled on both timed and untimed examinations, as well as problem-solving interviews. The National Math Stars team evaluated each application and selected Stars based on mathematical ability, interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), and need for additional support.
Stars and their families receive more than $100,000 in resources over 10 years (from selection through high school graduation). The program includes advanced coursework, mentorship from mathematicians, summer camp experiences, family advising, community events, and financial assistance for STEM extracurriculars. It is completely free for all participants.

National Math Stars was founded in 2023. The nonprofit’s mission is to ensure mathematically extraordinary students from all communities have the resources they need to reach the frontiers of math and science. Earlier this year, they announced $16.5M in funding to support their first three years of operation.
